Sorting in Breaks

Problem

You have a report that contains general ledger period description (ie month) and general ledger period code (ie 1 to 14). You have included the code for sorting purposes. You have a break on period description but when you try to sort on the code it doesn't work. Why and how can you 'fix' it?

Answer

In BusinessObjects, break sorts always override normal sorts. By putting a break on the description you are automatically including a sort.

Solution

There are a number of ways around this. Here are 2 of the easiest:

  1. First of all, insert a break on code but in the format break box untick all the boxes such as break header, break footer etc. This effectively disables the break leaving only its sorting functionality. Then insert a break on description. The sort on code will take priority over the sort on description.

    OR

  2. Create a combination break. Select both description and code in the report by holding down the control key. Insert a break. Providing the 'code' column or row appears before the 'description' in your report block the sort will be on 'code'.

Note - in both of the above examples you can hide the code object (Format Block, Pivot and then select the object and click on Hide) without affecting the sort.
