As a condition of Commonwealth support under the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (Section 19-70), higher education providers must provide statistical information in respect of the provision of higher education by the provider. Non-compliance could lead to a breach of the quality and accountability requirements for the higher education provider (Section 22-15 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003).
Data collections are administered by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Through it DEEWR collects data on students, staff, finances, research income and research publications. Prior to the change of government in December 2007, DEEWR was known as DEST (Department of Education, Science and Training).
